The new NEN 1010 is based on the IEC publication 364 and is concerned with the protection of low voltage electrical circuits against overcurrent. Current/time diagrams are included to illustrate the principles of types of operation in power switching circuits. The electromagnetic method is useful for protection against short-circuit currents. A coil is energised and moves a cylindrical core to open the contact. Bimetallic strips are also employed and may protect cables from overheating. Arcs may be quenched by putting plastics in the neighbourhood of the contacts. Tabular values are quoted for test currents and cable loads appropriate to a nominal current range from 6 to 25 A.
Possible applications in the light of the NEN 1010 3rd publication: modern safety methods for low voltage installations. I
