Measurements of velocities of solid particles were performed in an horizontal pipe 55 mm in diameter and 36.73 m in length, by application of radioactive tracers with the 'single grain' technique. The solid particles used are hollow cylinders of polyethylene of density rhos = 958 kg.m(sup-3) with h = 3.78 mm and d = 3.16 mm as characteristic dimensions. The mean weight is about 27 mg per grain. Our labelling operation consists of inserting in the bend a thin gold wire of 0.2x1 mm which increases the grain weight by about 3 %, with an initial activity of 50 microCi. Our experiment covered seven runs of about ten minutes each, with the values of solid loading q between 13 and 22. One hundred marked particles are mixed with 500 kg of non-radioactive particles in the storage tank shortly before the first run. A high performance magnetic recorder, connected to six scintillation counters, permits the calculation of the successive velocities of the particles along the axis. But, without means for mixing control, we cannot use all of them. (Kursetz)
