Thermal power generation in Japan has faced many new challenges since the first oil embargo took place in 1973. Besides the limited oil supply, there are also other requirements such as the construction of units which are capable of cyclic operation due to the increasing contribution by nuclear power plants to the network and the increasing peaking duty, and also the drastic abatement of discharges from power plants. In view of the new requirements of the industry, IHI has concentrated its endeavors on the following subjects: Improvement and expansion of the application of cyclic operation boilers to meet network requirements. Development of coal utilization technologies. Testifying the practicability of various environmental protection technologies. Approach to the generating plants of extremely high efficiency. A brief study over the state of the art of these technologies is presented. (Wassmann)
