The PC2-6 type medium speed diesel engine has been up-rated from the PC2-5 type: 650 PS/cyl. (478 kW/cyl.) to 750 PS/cyl. (552 kW/cyl.). It was developed aiming at low specific fuel consumption, high power and high reliability with the necessary modifications based on the wide experiences gained from the PC2-5 BTC type and PC4 type engines. In addition to the improvement of the fuel injection equipment, stronger air swirl in the cylinder results in improving the combustion efficiency. Furthermore, the gas flow is improved by the adoption of the high pressure ratio and high efficiency IHI-BBC VTR series 4 turbochargers in combination with the introduction of the MMPC (Modified Modular Pulse Converter) charging system. Preliminary tests with the above modifications were held in March 1981 at our workshop and proved low specific fuel consumptions as expected. (Wassmann)
