We presented a high-resolution laser scanning device along with a suite of software tools for high-quality digital modelling of 3D objects. The device has a scanning surface 30 - 30 cm2 wide with a stand-off distance of about 50 cm and a resulting depth resolution of 50 m. The laser scanner was used for recording the relief of the Minerva of Arezzo, a bronze statue probably dated 3rd century B.C., and currently under repair at the Restoration Centre of the Soprintendenza Archeologica of the Tuscany Region. We showed the simplified digital model of the whole statue as obtained with this first scan, before the beginning of the restoration; other scans will be realized during the various phases of the restoration process in order to keep trace of the changes in the statue's shape. The Minerva right arm, whose original position is uncertain, is not the original one; the complete digital model allowed the realization of a software application (by Numeri) capable to visualize various hypothetical positions for the statue's right arm.
