Over recent years, the vehicle interior has gained on importance for manufacturers which certainly goes beyond its functionality. Now it is possible to adjust the same model to several target groups by choosing certain materials and designs. Therefore, manufacturers of car seats aim to advance the optical and tactile properties of their products and to extend utilisation features which can render their products more individual and exclusive without increasing manufacturing cost considerably. Therefore, the development of a car seat starts already a long time before batch production starts. Currently, product development of textile components follows the traditional method. This means that there is no data link between design and two-dimensional pattern generation, which consequently implies long development times and high cost. A high degree of manual skill is still applied in pattern development. Therefore, the current AiF project aims at the development of a continuous process of more efficient pattern generation by using three-dimensional data (car seats, car interior) which can be imported from the automobile industry or obtained by measurement (three-dimensional scanning). Thus the designer can work on the three-dimensional model. Special attention is paid to the various ways of fastening the textile seat covers to the seat upholstery. Numerous methods of visualisation make it possible - at this early stage of development - to check the effect of disintegrating the pattern parts by varying trim seams, patterns and colours. Changes can be made at once. The two-dimensional patterns are calculated on the basis of the complete design.
