Metallurgical examination of fusions made with an electron beam in non-weldable superalloy Inconel 713C based on nickel and intermetallic phases were carried out. The fusions simulated the phenomena occurring in the weld and the heat-affected zone during welding. Light microscopy, transmission and scanninig electron microscopies and X-ray structural analysis were used in the study. Microstructural changes affecting crack initiation during smelting were determined. In the remelted zone, precipitation of an intermetallic gamma Ni3AlTi phase took place. A cell-dendritic structure with many secondary (NbTi)C secretions were detailed. Types and morphology of the phases produced in the fusion zone were characterized. The fusion structure showed some attributes of a nanostructure. The occurring cracks were related to stresses resulting from low thermal conductivity of the alloy, its rapid crystallization and interdendritic microporosity.
