Overhead presentation. The chemically bonded PTFE-polyamide materials (PTFE-PA) represent a new kind of materials - preferably for tribological application fields. The very good material and processing properties of polyamides are combined with the antiadhesive properties of PTFE in these materials. A processing stable morphology is received by chemical bonding/compatibility of PTFE with PA chains. The PTFE particles are well distributed and fixed in the PA matrix.Very good tribological properties (low friction coefficients, excellent wear resistance) are observed in comparison with pure polyamides and commercial mixtures of PTFE and polyamide. Production and processing of such materials can be realized with commercial plastic processing equipment under usual polyamide processing conditions. PTFE emulsion polymers (PTFE primary particle size: 200 nm) have proofed as favorable materials also for the fiber formation process, if an optimal dissipation and distribution of the PTFE agglomerates is reached during the production via reactive compounding. The quality of dissipation and distribution of the PTFE in the PA matrix can be estimated by DSC. The mechanical properties and first results of fiber formation and fiber properties are shown in this contribution. Wound bearings, textiles for tribological applications and the use as compression glands are rated as fields of application. Such PTFE-PA fibers can also be an inexpensive substitution for the expensive fibers from pure PTFE.
