The section of Wood biology and Wood products and the Süddeutsche Kunststoff Zentrum (SKZ) Würzburg co-operating to develop innovative elements for facades made of Wood- Polymer-Composites (WPC) using the example of window profiles. To achieve this aim formulations containing wood, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and additives will be investigated and optimized. The advantages of wood and PVC shall be combined to a new material. The use of wood flour enhances stiffness (modulus of elasticity) and thermal stability of the profile. Dimensional stability and biological durability is improved by the polymer. In comparison to rigid PVC the composite shows lower impact resistance values. Increasing the impact resistance of the formulation will be a relevant research objective. Therefore the wood component will be chemically modified with various agents. In addition a choice of appropriate PVC-additives has to be made. To increase the UV-stability a cap layer will be used. The cap layer will be applied via co-Extrusion to protect the core material. The research results will be presented.
