The article refers on the development of a Variable Gas Admission Valve to further improve the mixture formation in gas engines with single gas admission valves. An actuator that works on the voice coil principle is coupled with an injection valve and driven by a self developed control unit. With this Gas Admission Valve variable valve lifts and valve lift forms are feasible. In regard to local and temporary mixture homogeneity during the induction stroke these variables were optimized by the use of simulation calculations. As a result a mixture formation pipe was engineered and an optimized stroke curve for the Variable Gas Admission Valve could be ascertained. In subsequent experiments on a 1-cylinder research engine benefits of the Variable Gas Admission Valve could be detected. Valve lift optimization leads to efficiency improvements at constant nitrogen oxide emission.
