The application of steel liners made from high-strength steel is particularly attractive for the construction of large nyaropower projects with high head and high discharge. The paper addresses the necessity for common rules and standards regarding design, structural analysis and quality control for some of the most crucial construction details of the steel lined parts of water conveyance systems. A technical overview of three current projects of AF-Consult Switzerland Ltd. (AFC) is given. It is then summarized which constraints and boundary conditions can lead to the considerations of using high-strength steel. Based on that, some design key features of hydropower plants are outlined. In combination with the usage of high-strength steel (HSS) these key features hold the most critical construction elements. Despite its frequent use, there is still a lack of consistent standards for the design, the structural analysis and the quality control before, during and after installation of such details. Consequently, the paper provides a list of these required standards and rules.
