Eine neue Bioethanolanlage in Schwedt soll als erste weltweit Stroh in Biogas umwandeln und bildet eine effiziente Technologie, um aus dem Reststoff Stroh einen hochwertigen Treibstoff herzustellen. Das Verfahren ist großtechnisch nutzbar und soll aus dem Umkreis von bis zu 80 km von Bauern mit Stroh beliefert werden, das zuvor getrocknet und gepresst werden muss. Das Biogas wird nach dem Häckseln und einem bis zu 60 Tage dauernden Vergärungsprozess in mehreren etwa 20 m hohen Gärtanks in Kolonnen gereinigt, getrocknet und auf Erdgasqualität gebracht. Biomethan aus Stroh ist zurzeit noch teurer als Erdgas, deshalb wird hier eine Förderung vorgenommen. Bis 2019 soll die Kapazität der Anlage auf 16,5 MW ausgebaut werden, was etwa der Verwertung von 40000 t Stroh oder 140 GWh entspricht.
