A new scheme for measuring external pressure distribution along a high-birefringent fiber is presented. The distributed fiber pressure sensor system is based on polarization mode conversion principle in polarization-maintaining fiber. The location and magnitude of local mode conversion is determined by a heterodyne interferometry with a low-coherent laser diode. The method uses forward travelling light in the high-birefringent fiber. The spatial resolution is better than 0,15 m. By using higher internal birefringent fiber the spatial resolution of the pressure points and pressure measurement range can be improved. This distributed sensing has many advantages, such as high signal-to-noise ratio resolution and wide dynamic range.
