The paper describes the application of a resonant link converter to a 3-phase bipolar brushless d.c. drive. The operation of the resonant link is described highlighting the factors which affect the choice of inductive and capacitive elements of the link in terms of the losses in the link and the link voltage overshoots which may occur during phase commutation. Measurements are included from a representative 135 W low power prototype system operating at ultrasonic switching frequencies. A comparison between the performance of the resonant link converter with a standard fixed d.c. link converter demonstrates that significant improvement in system efficiency are obtainable. A potential for reduced electromagnetic emissions is also highlighted.
