IMI Pactrol design and manufacture a wide range of automatic electronic controls for the heating, chilling and transport sectors. Many are designed to specific customer requirements and fitted into domestic appliances, while others are stand-alone products aimed directly at the end-user. Before 1996, Pactrol is planning to gain full EMC approval for all its current stand-alone products while assisting its OEM customers to gain CE marks for their existing and new appliances. Meanwhile, as part of its ISO9001 procedures, the company is employing its own EMC guidelines during the process of product development, to aid the supply of 'right first time' products. Pactrol's Casestudy describes the specific techniques used to bring the emissions from the Company's gas burner spark ignition generators within the limits specified in EN55014. A combination of complimentary measures are described which together achieved a cost effective solution. The measures adopted include a review of the customer's performance specification with Pactrol's PCB layout, the effective use of carbon loaded ignition cables and the shielding provided by the existing metal enclosure, together with the optimum design and mounting of a filter in series with the power supply cable.
