Traffic in multiservice networks is essentially of two types: 'intrinsic rate' for audio and video flows, 'elastic' for the transfer of files, images or texts. Because of their extremely variable bit rate, it proves very difficult to characterise traffic streams to allow adequate resource reservation to ensure quality of service, especially when the traffic stream results from the aggregation of individual flows. ITU and the ATM Forum have standardized a certain number of service categories, based on preventive or reactive control, each variously adapted to the characteristics and performance requirements of different applications. The present 'best effort' service model of the Internet is being enhanced to allow resource reservation (the int-serv model) and service differentiation for packets of several classes (the diff-serv model).
