The authors discuss problems in alarm handling and the use of expert systems to aid in the interpretation of alarm messages for better and more rapid diagnosis of the faults causing these alarms. Results have shown that many organisations perceive there is a problem with alarm interpretation, and that expert systems may assist in overcoming these problems. This report gives the results of a questionnaire on expert systems in alarm handling and is addressed to power system managers and engineers. An addendum to this report summarises results of the same questionnaire relevant to system developers. This survey was conducted by Cigre Task Force 02 of Working Group 38.06. Many questions were multiple choice, some of which were of the 'yes/no' type, while others required more descriptive responses or opinions. The results have been tabulated according to the responses given.
