Why biological anthropologists should identify as anthropologists: The meaning of membership in the AAA and the AAASStrier, Karen B. et al. | 2016
Much of this text comes from my presentation, “Do biological anthropologists have an ethical obligation to identify as anthropologists? Reflections at the AAPA × AAA intersection,” (Strier,
) in the symposium, “Ethical Practice in Biological Anthropology” organized by Saine and Shattuck‐Heidorn ( ) for the 2013 meetings of the AAPA. The initial idea to write it up was encouraged by Robert Sussman and Michael Little, and I am grateful to both of them, as well as Jonathan Marks, for reading this manuscript in advance. The idea to link it to membership issues emerged from conversations with Lorena Madrigal and Rachel Caspari after the BAS business meeting at the 2015 meetings of the AAA. By way of disclosure, I have previously served on the Executive committees of the AAA's BAS and of the AAAS's Section H (Anthropology), and I am currently Secretary of Section H. I am grateful to Peter Ellison for agreeing to publish this as guest editorial in AJPA. - 6
