Synthesis, Structural Analysis, and Visualization of Poly(2-ethynyl-9-substituted carbazole)s and Poly(3-ethynyl-9-substituted carbazole)s Containing Chiral and Achiral Minidendritic Substituents - The syntheses of two achiral minidendritic monomers, 2-ethynyl-9-(3,4,5-tris(dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyl)carbazole and 3-ethynyl-9-(3,4,5-tris(dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyl)carbazole, and their chiral analogues, 2-ethynyl-9-(3,4,5-tris((S)-2-methylbutan-1-yloxy)benzyl)carbazole and 3-ethynyl-9-(3,4,5-tris((S)-2-methylbutan-1-yloxylbenzyl) carbazole, are reported. Cis-transoidal polymers were prepared with Noyori's catalyst and characterized by a combination of 1H NMR, ultraviolet-visible, and circular dichroism spectroscopy, thermal optical polarized microscopy, and X-ray diffraction experiments. Individual chains were visualized by atomic force microscopy.

Dramatic Decrease of the Cis Content and Molecular Weight of cis-Transoidal Polyphenylacetylene at 23 (degree)C in Solutions Prepared in Air - cis-Transoidal polyphenylacetylene synthesized with Noyori's catalyst, both in solution and in bulk, in air or under an inert atmosphere, decreases in its cis content and molecular weight. Both in air and under an inert atmosphere, an intramolecular cyclization, followed by chain cleavage accompanied by the release of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, is responsible for this process.

ARTICLES - CuI and CuII Salts of Group VIA Elements as Catalysts for Living Radical Polymerization Initiated with Sulfonyl Chlorides - Published online 5 September 2000 - A new class of nonacidic Cu2Y-Bpy and CuY-Bpy catalysts (where Y is O, S, Se, or Te and Bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine) for the living radical polymerization of vinylic monomers initiated from sulfonyl halides is described. A polymerization mechanism based on the in situ generation of the CuCl-CuCl2 pair is suggested. The experimental rate constants of polymerization were higher for the Cu2Y-based catalysts and increased for both the Cu2Y and CuY catalysts in the order Y
