Cover Feature - Second-harmonic generation (SHG, the frequency doubling of light) is becoming an increasingly valuable technique for surface science. The three plots illustrate some recently developed aspects of SHG investigations. (Top left) An SHG magic angle of 39.2(degree) is shown to exist, indicating the limiting experimental tilt angle evaluated as distributions become increasingly more random (i.e., as they broaden). (Middle right) SHG measurements can be quantitatively corrected for the influence of microscopic roughness at both solid and liquid interfaces. (Bottom left) A simple method is illustrated in which artifacts and errors in SHG measurements related to coverage-dependent changes in surface orientation can be minimized by judicious choice of an experimental configuration (i.e., for a particular polarization rotation angle of the incident beam).
