From Children’s Maps to Child’s Play: Imagination Inspires CartographyBiographical notesKenneth Field (left, pictured with Chair of Society of Cartographer’s Steve Chilton and Assistant Editor Alexander Kent at the top of St Cristobal Hill in Santiago) is Principal Lecturer and Course Director of GIS at Kingston University London and Editor of The Cartographic Journal. Santiago 2009 was his second ICA conference which went without a hitch…well, apart from the late inbound flight, the delay to Alex who spent 10 needless additional hours in Sao Paulo (with Steve taking his seat on the re-scheduled second leg to Santiago); the missing of the last funicular railway down St Cristobal Hill which resulted in three cartographers making a 2 mile trip down said hill in the pitch dark, utterly lost and without a map; and the complete inability of any form of debit or credit card working despite assurances from Lloyds TSB that ‘everything was working fine as far as they were concerned’ (I have since moved banks). Still, it was a great week and whatever slight inconveniences emerged…it erased the memories of Moscow 2007. Thanks to all those who shared the experience with me…and loaned me money.Kenneth FieldKingston University LondonJanuary 2010 et al. | 2010
